What is Responsive?

A site that looks good whether you view it on a huge screen or a tiny phone. Standard in 2026.

Responsive means a website automatically adapts to whichever screen it is viewed on. The same site should look good and work smoothly whether you are at a large desktop monitor, a tablet, or a small mobile. The word comes from "responsive" — the site responds to and adjusts for the conditions.

A good analogy is water poured into different glasses. The water takes the shape of the glass without you doing anything. A responsive site works the same way: menus collapse, text wraps neatly, and images shrink so everything fits the current screen. A site that is NOT responsive becomes tiny on mobile, where you have to pinch and zoom to read anything.

In 2026, this is expected, not a luxury. Well over half of all web traffic happens on mobile, so a site that does not work there simply loses most of its visitors.

Why is responsive design important for your business?

Most of your customers probably find you on mobile — perhaps when they search for "opening hours" or "book appointment" on the go. If your site is awkward on a small screen, the sale is often lost immediately.

Google also favours mobile-friendly sites in search results. A responsive website ranks better, which brings more visitors at no extra cost. A non-responsive site is penalised on both fronts: worse visibility AND a worse experience.

Responsive in practice

Imagine a restaurant. A hungry person standing in town searches for lunch on their phone. On a responsive site, they immediately see the menu, opening hours, and a large button to call and book — all adapted to the mobile screen.

On a non-responsive site, they meet a tiny desktop page where they have to zoom around to find the phone number. They give up, go back, and pick the next restaurant in the list. Every site we build is responsive from the ground up.

Common questions about Responsive

What does responsive mean?

Responsive means a website automatically adapts to the screen it is viewed on. The same site looks good on desktop, tablet, and mobile without you needing to zoom or scroll sideways.

Why is it important for a site to be responsive?

Most visitors come from mobile, so a site that does not work there loses most of its customers. Google also ranks mobile-friendly sites higher in search results.

Are all modern websites responsive?

Responsive design is standard in 2026 and should always be included, but older sites that are hard to use on mobile are still common. If your site is awkward on a phone, it is probably not responsive.
