What is Prompt?

A prompt is simply the instruction or question you give to an AI. When you write to ChatGPT or Claude, what you write is your prompt. The AI reads your prompt and responds based on it — so the prompt is the starting point for everything the AI does for you.

A good way to think about it is like ordering from a very knowledgeable but literal colleague. Ask vaguely for "something about marketing" and you get a vague answer. Ask clearly for "three concrete ideas for how a small bakery can get more customers via Instagram" — and you get something useful. The clearer the brief, the better the result.

It is often summed up as "garbage in, garbage out": rubbish in, rubbish out. Learning to write good prompts — sometimes called prompt craft — is about being clear about what you want, providing context, and ideally examples.
