What is Hallucination (AI)?

When AI confidently invents facts that sound completely right but are wrong. It is not lying on purpose — it just guesses with impressive self-assurance.

An AI hallucination is when a language model responds with something that sounds credible but simply is not true. The AI can invent a law that does not exist, a product you never sold, or a quote nobody said — and present it with the same confidence as a correct answer.

Why does this happen? Because a language model does not "know" things the way a human does. It guesses its way to the next word based on patterns it has learned. Most of the time the guess is right, but sometimes it goes off track and fills the gaps with something made up. It is a bit like a colleague who would rather invent an answer than admit they do not know.

Hallucinations are one of the biggest pitfalls with AI, and an important reason to always double-check sensitive answers.

Why are AI hallucinations important to understand for your business?

If you use AI in customer service, advice, or content, a hallucination can lead to a customer receiving wrong information. In the worst case, it involves prices, contracts, or regulations — and the mistake can be costly and damage trust.

Understanding that AI can be wrong is therefore crucial. It does not mean you should avoid AI, but that you build in controls — such as human review or RAG that anchors answers in your own documents.

AI hallucination in practice

Say a customer asks your AI chat about your opening hours on public holidays. If the chat does not have the right information, it may hallucinate an answer that sounds reasonable — "We are open 10–14" — even though you are closed. The customer travels there unnecessarily and is annoyed. The solution is to connect the chat to your actual opening hours so it answers from reality, not from guesses.

Common questions about Hallucination (AI)

What does hallucination mean in AI?

An AI hallucination is when AI confidently invents facts that sound right but are wrong. It happens because the AI guesses its way to answers rather than truly knowing. That is why important information should always be double-checked.

Why does AI hallucinate?

AI builds answers by guessing the next word based on patterns, not by looking up facts. When it lacks the right information, it fills the gaps with something that sounds plausible.

How do you avoid AI hallucinations?

You reduce hallucinations by connecting the AI to reliable sources, for example with RAG, and by having a human review sensitive answers. You can never remove the risk entirely, but you can reduce it significantly.
