Short answer: how to do a cloud migration?
A successful cloud migration follows five steps:mapwhat you haveplanwhat to move and how, migratein reasonably large stages, testcarefully, andoptimizeafterwards. The most common mistake is to move everything at once without a plan. Take it step by step, and you'll avoid the chaos.
The cloud is basically someone else's computer hall that you rent space in. Instead of owning and managing your own servers, you pay for the capacity you actually use.
Step 1: Map what you have
Start with an inventory. What systems, applications and data do you have? What talks to what? This map is the foundation for everything else. If you miss a dependency here, it will show up as a problem later.
Step 2: Plan the move
Not everything needs to be moved in the same way. There are some common strategies:
- Lift and shift:you move the system as is. Fastest, but you miss out on the full benefits of the cloud.
- Adapt:you adjust the system so it makes better use of the cloud.
- Rebuild:you are rebuilding the system for the cloud. The most work, but the biggest profit in the long run.
A good piece of advice: start with something small and uncritical. Learn a system that doesn't stop the business if something goes wrong.
Step 3: Migrate in stages
Move in bite-sized chunks rather than all at once. Then you can detect problems early and correct them before they grow. Always have a plan for how to get back if something goes wrong (a so-called rollback).
Step 4: Test thoroughly
Before releasing to real users: test that everything works. Are the right people getting the right things? Is the performance sufficient? Do the integrations work? Also test the security, not just the function.
Step 5: Optimize afterwards
When everything is in place, the real work begins to reduce costs and increase performance. In the cloud, you pay for what you use, so it pays to turn off things that spin unnecessarily.
Common mistakes to avoid
- No mapping:you move things you don't understand.
- Forgotten security:the cloud is not automatically secure, you have to configure it correctly.
- Runaway costs:without follow-up, the cloud bill can surprise.
- No rollback plan:you have no way back when things go wrong.
What about the data?
If you handle personal data, you need to know where the data ends up. Is it stored within the EU? Does the cloud provider sign a personal data processing agreement? These are not trivialities, they are requirements according to the GDPR.
