What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is a dedicated search tab where the user gets a long, complex answer generated by Google's Gemini model instead of a list of blue links. The answer is based on information from multiple sources that the AI chooses to cite – and that's exactly where the battle for visibility now takes place.

The difference to the usual AI Overviews is that AI Mode is more conversation-driven. The user can ask follow-up questions, ask for more information and navigate an entire sales journey without leaving Google.

Why does it matter to your business?

Early data from the US, where AI Mode rolled out earlier, shows that the click-through rate (CTR) from classic organic search results drops on informational searches. Users get the answer in the AI interface without clicking further. At the same time, the CTR of the sources that are actually cited in the AI response increases – they get new, high-quality traffic.

The result is a winner-takes-all scenario. Either you are cited in AI Mode, or you are invisible to a large part of the search traffic.

This is how Google decides who is cited

Gemini selects sources based on three main factors. First and foremost, it's about authority and E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) – Google wants to cite sources who provably know what they're talking about, and that's measured by, among other things, real authors with LinkedIn profiles and documented industry experience.

The second factor is structured, response-oriented content. Pages that are structured around clear questions and direct answers to these – so-called AEO format – are cited more often than pages with long, pretentious text.

The third factor is freshness. Articles published or updated recently are prioritized, especially in fast-moving topics such as AI, technology and business strategy.

Practical steps to optimize for AI Mode

Write clear H2 headings formulated as questions. When a user asks AI Mode "How much does a website cost?" the model looks for pages where that question is answered explicitly. A headline like "How much does a business website cost?" followed by a direct response increases the chance of being quoted significantly.

Include a summary at the beginning of the article.AI models often read the "over the fold" content first. A tight, fact-rich introduction that summarizes the page's most important insights increases the likelihood that that passage will be followed up in an AI response.

Add structured data (Schema.org).FAQPage, HowTo and Article schema help Google understand the structure of the page and increase the chances of appearing in both AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Build credibility with real quotes and case studies.AI models reward sources that contain specific, verifiable claims. Anonymous "experts say" is no longer enough.

AI Mode vs AI Overviews – what's the difference?

AI Overviews appear in the regular search results above the organic links. These are shorter summaries of a few sentences. AI Mode is a separate tab with long form conversation. Both are based on Gemini, but AI Mode handles more complex, compound questions and is used by more advanced searchers.

For most businesses, it makes sense to optimize for both at the same time, as the strategies are largely the same.

What happens to your existing SEO?

Classic SEO is not dying – but it needs a new layer. Technical optimization, internal linking and backlinks are still important signals. What is changing is that it is no longer enough to "rank high". You also have to be the source the AI chooses to cite – and that requires a different kind of content strategy.
