What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation. The art of appearing on Google without paying for ads. Slow to start, unbeatable in the long run.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the art of getting your website to appear high in Google's search results without paying for ads. Think of Google as a vast librarian who must recommend the best book for every question. SEO is about making your page such an obviously good recommendation that the librarian gladly puts it at the top of the shelf.

Google decides the order using hundreds of signals, but they boil down to three things: the page is relevant to what people search for, it is technically fast and well built, and other pages trust it by linking to it. SEO therefore covers both the content you write, how your site is built under the hood, and how trust is built over time.

The important thing to understand is that SEO is long-term work, not a button you press. Unlike ads, which stop showing the moment you stop paying, good SEO builds value that stays. It takes longer to get going, but often becomes invaluable over time.

Why is SEO important for your business?

Most buying journeys start with a search. If you are not visible when the customer searches for what you offer, it is often a competitor they find instead. Good SEO means the right people find you at exactly the moment they are looking for a solution.

Search traffic is also often both cheap and warm. Once the work pays off, visitors keep coming without you paying per click, and those who find you via search are already interested in what you do.

SEO in practice

Say you run a carpentry business. With thoughtful SEO, you write content that answers what customers actually search for, ensure the site loads quickly on mobile, and register the business correctly on maps. Then you appear when someone nearby looks for a carpenter.

At ZORC, we work on both the technical and content side of SEO, and also look at how you appear in modern AI answers, so customers find you wherever they search.
