What is Agile?

A way of working where you adapt as you go instead of planning everything upfront. Like surfing instead of building a bridge.

Agile is a way of working where you adapt as you go instead of locking in every detail upfront. You work in short cycles, show results often, and adjust course based on what you learn along the way. The word means something like "nimble" — and that is the point: being able to pivot quickly when reality changes.

The analogy is surfing instead of building a bridge. A bridge is planned in minute detail and then stays fixed. A surfer reads the wave in the moment and adjusts constantly. Agile work is like surfing: you have a goal, but the path there shifts as you go.

The opposite is the old model where everything was planned upfront and the customer saw nothing until it was finished — often with unpleasant surprises when it was finally revealed. Agile is built on frequent check-ins and feedback instead.

Why is agile important for your business?

With an agile approach, you see results early and often, and you can steer direction along the way instead of just hoping for the best. If the market shifts or you come up with a better idea mid-project, you can pivot — without throwing away all the work.

It reduces the risk of ending up with a finished product that no longer fits your needs. You stay at the wheel the whole way.

Agile in practice

A company commissions a new website. Instead of the agency disappearing for three months and returning with a complete product, they work agilely: every couple of weeks they show a working piece, the company tests and gives feedback, and the next step is planned from that. When the company halfway through decides it wants to highlight a new service, that can be woven in straight away.

In practice, agile means fewer nasty surprises and a final product that feels right, because you helped shape it all the way through.
